My air conditioner fan isn't working right.

Car: Saturn, SL2, 2000, V6     -    Back to Fix-It

Q.My air conditioner fan isn't working right. It will come on for a while, and then stop working randomly.
I sense that it's a loose connection or a short. (There is cold air when I hold my hands up to the vents, but not the air isn't blowing with any force.)
My car is a 2000 Saturn SL2. If I knew where to look, I would like to check the connections and wires to see if anything is loose, but don't know where to start. Thanks.

I already checked/done: Not much. Just tried wiggling a few wires and turning the fan on and off.

Answer You need to check the connector at the blower motor, which is located underneath the right side of the dash. You will be able to see it when looking up from the passenger floorboard area. If connections are tight, then the blower motor itself is starting to fail. This is a common symptom of a blower motor going out. It will stop working intermittently and then finally will stop working all together.
Blower motor location and removal directions:

Disconnect the blower motor electrical connector.
Remove the lower blower motor cover retaining screws.

Remove the lower blower motor cover.
Remove the blower motor nuts.
NOTE Cut through the case as straight as possible because the motor cup must be replaced.
In order to prevent damage to the component, do not cut any deeper than necessary to remove the motor cup.
Remove the blower motor and cup from the lower case by cutting through the case between the circular ribs around the motor with a sharp utility knife.
Release the blower motor retaining tab and remove the motor from the cup.

Install the blower motor into the motor cup that was cut out of the lower case.

Install the blower motor nuts, and tighten the nuts to 21 inch lbs.(2.4 Nm).
Attach the service ring to the motor cup with the screws included in the kit, and tighten the screws to 15 inch lbs.(1.8 Nm).
Install the blower motor and service ring into the HVAC module using the screws included in the kit. Make certain the blower motor electrical connector is pointing rearward in the vehicle, and tighten the screws to 15 inch lbs.(1.8 Nm).
Install the lower blower motor cover.
Install the lower blower motor cover retaining screws, and tighten the screws to 15 inch lbs.(1.8 Nm).
Connect the blower motor electrical connector.

Addition It's weird -- the blower went off again, and when I rolled down the window (automatic windows) it came on again. Wondering if it's electrical now..?

Answer Possible that there is a problem with the BCM( body control module), but that requires a diagnostic scanner with BCM testing capability to test. This unfortunately means a trip to the dealership for diagnostics- usually $100 for this.
Before going that route, wait until it quits working again, then test for power at the blower motor connector with a voltmeter or test light. Make sure you have the car on and fan switch set to high. If power at the connector, then its a faulty blower motor. If no power, then most likely a BCM problem.
