Q.I have an Audi A6 2.7 with 115000 miles on the odometer. The car has become for the last month or so very hard to start. I replaced the ignition coils, fuel filter, and spark plugs but I continue to have the problem. Please advice.

I already checked/done: replaced fuel filter
replaced spark plugs
replaced ignition coils

More Info required Is the malfunction indicator light (MIL) illuminated?
Have the on board diagnostics (OBD II) been interrogated and diagnostic trouble code(s) (DTC) retrieved?
If so can you list them please?
When specifically does this condition occur?
Will it malfunction every time, hot or cold?
When it does not start, does it crank normally but not fire/catch at all, start and die immediately, start die immediately then crank and not fire/catch, difficult to start but does so and runs poorly for a bit then clears out?
Not being able to experience the condition first hand is a significant disadvantage. "A road test is worth a thousand words." If you can best describe the situation with as many details as possible (in the morning, cold, hot, if it sits for two days, when the A/C is on, when I get gas at xxxx, etc.)

Addition yes, MIL light is lit; codes that list:
16502, 17866, 16538, 18032, 17862, 18062, 17869, 17870, 17528, 18010.
It does not malfunction everytime.. sometimes it does it when it's cold. For instance, this morning it fired. I let it run since the battery is getting weak. It ran for five minutes, I turned the car off and then I tried to turn it off and it did not start.
The car crank normal but it just won't fire. The condition has been present for about two weeks now.

Answer 16502 P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit - High Input (Low Temp)
P1458 17866 Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 2 Short to Ground
16538 P0154 O2 Sensor Circuit - No Activity Detected (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
18032 P1624 MIL Request Signal Active
P1454 17862 Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Short 1 to Ground
P1654 18062 Please check DTC Memory of Control Panel ECU
P1461 17869 Exhaust Gas Temperature Control Bank 1 Range/Performance
P1462 17870 Exhaust Gas Temperature Control Bank 2 Range/Performance
P1120 17528 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit, Bank2-Sensor1 Open
18010 P1602 Power Supply (B+) Terminal 30 - Low Voltage
These DTCs would be consistent with a failed engine power supply or fuel pump relay. I suggest you replace both relays. This will likely correct this condition.
The fuel pump relay should be located on the central electric relay panel in position #4. If you remove the under dash panel above the driver's feet, up to the left you will see a relay panel with many relays. Along the bottom edge you will see a half dozen bolts with wires attached. In the first row of relays above this it will be the fourth relay from the left.
The Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) Power Supply Relay, J271 is located in the Electronics box in the air intake plenum directly in front of the windshield on the driver's side. Once you open the box the relay's location should be in position #3 and indicated on a sticker inside the box.
I am confident that this should cure your condition, as I just assisted another on an S4 with similar symptoms/DTCs. And have personally dealt with it in the past.

Addition Did not find the Motronic engine control power supply relay. There is only one black box in front of the windshield, and this box only contains one relay. It has the #214 on it. Is this the relay I am seeking?
In that area, from left to right, you find the battery, then the brake fuid reservoir and then the forementioned box. Please advise.

Answer There should be several relays as well as the Engine Control Module (ECM). Are they possibly under the ECM?
You could also start with replacing the fuel pump relay first as this is usually the one that fails.

Addition i will do this, fuel pump relay was easy to find, you gave excellent directions; no idea where ecm might be..

Answer The "E-box" in the intake plenum is a large (10"x10"?) black plastic box. It is held closed with a half dozen 8mm hex head screws. Is this the E-box you checked?

Addition yes! And it had just one relay right beside it

Answer The relays and ECM are "inside" it. Not "beside"

Addition that is what I meant.. there is a shiny silver box inside the black box, and beside it, the relay.. both of which are inside the black plastic box.
