Shaking, rubbing/grinding noise when in gear

Car: Honda, Civic HX, 1998     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Honda Civic HX Repair Manuals

Q.I have a 1998 civic hx coupe auto with a CVT. Bought it 2 years ago. When i bought it, it had a shake whenever it took off just for the first 1-2 seconds. Now, it starts fine still and drives, but of course it still shakes when taking off and when in gear it makes a horrible rubbing/grinding noise. It sounds perfect when in park or neutral. Please help.

Answer This can be one of two different causes.
There is either the wrong type or very degraded fluid in the transmission or the part called the "start clutch" Is bad. That is a very expensive repair.
Get the proper Honda CVT fluid and drain the fill the transmission 3 times after driving it a short time between changes, like 1 mile or so. This will change all of the fluid instead of the 3 quarts that come out each draining.
Thay will usually fix it. If not you are stuck with the clutch replacement.
USE ONLY HONDA CVT FLUID.. yOU WILL NEED 12 QUARTS

Addition how much would it cost for the tcm, start clutch assembly, and removal and install tools?

Answer Its 500 dollars for the special tools, or more.
The kit is 720 dollars for all the parts needed
Fluid is about 7 dollars a quart.

Addition How much is the tcm and how much fluid does one fill up take.
Honda told me $10.00/qt. And at 12 qts to maybe fix it would get up there a bit. Is there a filter to change too?

Answer The TCM is in the kit..
One drain and fill will be right around 3 quarts. There is no external filter to change.
