Car: Toyota, Prius, 2005     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Toyota Prius Repair Manuals

Q.How do you remove the hub/bearing assembly from the steering knuckle on a 2005 prius front? I tried to press it out to no avail.

Answer You will have to improvise if you do not have the special service tools shown:

FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
REPLACEMENT
HINT: Refer to components. Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side. The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB LH NUT SST 09930-00010
SEPARATE SPEED SENSOR FRONT LH

SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH
Remove the 2 bolts and separate the front disc brake caliper assembly LH from the steering knuckle. NOTICE: Hang down the front disc brake caliper assembly LH with a wire or such.
REMOVE FRONT DISC NOTICE: Ensure no oil attaches to the disc surface.
SEPARATE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH SST 09628-62011
SEPARATE FRONT SUSPENSION ARM SUB-ASSEMBLY LOWER NO.1 LH
REMOVE FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY LH
Using a plastic hammer, tap the end of the front drive shaft assembly LH and disengage the fitting between the front drive shaft assembly LH and front axle assembly LH. HINT: If it is difficult to disengage, tap the end of the front drive shaft assembly LH with a brass bar and a hammer.
Push the front axle assembly LH outward from the vehicle to remove the front drive shaft assembly LH from the front axle assembly LH. NOTICE:
Be careful not to push the front axle assembly LH outward from the vehicle more than is necessary to remove it.
Be careful not to damage the drive shaft outboard joint boot.
Be careful not to damage the speed sensor rotor.
Hang the front drive shaft assembly LH down with a string or such

Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts to remove the front axle assembly LH from the front shock absorber

REMOVE FRONT WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO. 1 LH
Mount the steering knuckle in a soft vise.
Using a penetration screwdriver, remove the deflector from the steering knuckle. NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the steering knuckle.

Answer REMOVE JOINT ASSEMBLY, LWR BALL
Remove the clip and castle nut.
Using SST, remove the front lower ball joint assembly LH. SST 09611-36020 NOTICE:
Do not damage the steering knuckle.
Securely hang the SST to the spacer of the steering knuckle.
Replace the steering knuckle with a new one if the spacer comes off the steering knuckle

REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
Remove the 4 bolts to dust cover and front axle hub.
INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
Install the front axle hub and dust cover with 4 bolts. Torque: 56 Nm (571 kgf-cm, 41 ft. Lbs.)
INSTALL JOINT ASSEMBLY, LWR BALL
Install the front lower ball joint assembly LH to the steering knuckle and tighten with a castle nut. Torque: 71 Nm (724 kgf-cm, 52 ft. Lbs.) NOTICE:
Be careful that grease does not adhere to the threads or tapered part.
Clip hole alignment should be done after tightening the castle nut up to 60 beyond torque.
Install a new clip.
ETC the rest is the reverse of taking it apart

Addition I already have the steering knuckle/front axle hub sub assembly removed from the car. I can't separate the axle hub sub assembly from the steering knuckle. I tried an arbor press but it would not budge. I have all of the instructions that you have sent me.

More Info required Did you remove the four bolts that attach the hub assembly to the knuckle?

Answer If the bolts are out havr you used PB Blaster to melt the rust, it is a snug fit but not pressed in

Addition I used aerokroil. What is pb blasted?

Answer PB is the same thing, if the bolts are out and you are supporting the knuckle and pressing on the hub it should fall out

Addition The bolts are out and it is rock solid. I supported the knuckle and hung onto the bar of the arbor press. It would not budge. I have hammered, used a press. I don't know what I can do to get this separated,

Answer Heat would be my next move in that case, Is the bearing bad?

Addition Yes the bearing is bad. Do I still need a press or should heat break the rust?

Answer I think you may have to use both at this point. As I say it is like most hub/bearing assemblies where the edge of the hub fits snug in the knuckle and the bolts hold it in. The strength comes from the forces being put on it in shear not pulling it out of the knuckle. It should slide in and out with a tap on the hub flange if the knuckle is held in a vise, you should not even need the press. I would heat around the hub bore on the knuckle and tap the hub flange. Don't melt the knuckle
