how do i know if the water pump / timing belt was changed on my 98 honda accord lx?
Car: Honda, Accord LX, 1998 - Back to Fix-It - Honda Accord LX Repair Manuals
Q.how do i know if the water pump / timing belt was changed on my 98 honda accord lx?
Answer There are a few external signs you may see if it was replaced, but the best way is to remove the valve cover and the upper timing cover to see the condition of the belt.
Even that isnt a great way unless if was done very recently and you can still see the fresh printing on it.
The edge of the water pump can be seen from under the car, there will be an obvious diference in the color of the aluminum of the block and the pump.
You also may see the rubber washer missing from the adjuster bolt sticking out of the timing cover. The best way it to find the service records.
Addition I just paid a mechanic 500.00 to replace both the timing belt and water pump, he said it came as a kit? Is that common for a 98 Honda Accord LX - When the timing belt is changed, to change the water pump as well??? The Mechanic said that it was the best way to change them, both at the same time? Was he telling me the truth, and will i have to replace the valve cover gasket or anything if i open it up to look?
Answer It's always recommended the pump is replaced at the same time.
If the pump wasnt replaced and it started to leak a year or so down the line then essentially the same job has to be done over again. That makes for a very unhappy customer.
If he just did the pump you will clearly see a shinier part on the back edge of the engine where the rear part of the timing cover meets the block.
Its more visible from the bottom.
