Car: Toyota, Camry, 2003     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Toyota Repair Manuals

Q.2003 Camry-Extreme heat under hood after driving for awhile. Smells like rubber burning! All guages indicate no problem. All fluid levels O. K. Engine runs great. after driving for 30-40 miles right front fender is so hot you can hardly touch it, at the space between hood & fender. Brakes are not overheating. Something is wrong! Car has 82,000 miles.

More Info required Can you isolate where under the hood the heat is coming from? Does the drive belt seam hot or does it squeal at all? Have you check the alternator is it charging at 13.5 to 14 volts? If the coolant is good and the engine is not overheating and the brakes are not hot it does not leave much except the electrical system. Do you smell any electrical burning odors?

Addition All of the heat seems to be generated on passenger side front. Have not checked the alternator for output, but it is really hot to the touch! Belt seems to be O. K., no noise and it is not hot and appears to be tight. I can smell something, but can't determine if it is electrical or just rubber. This has been going on for approximately two weeks. Seems like with that much heat something would have gone really wrong by now. There is so much heat that almost everything on that side is hot to the touch. Only fluid that is not O. K. is washer fluid. When I had the car serviced last, I was told that there was a crack in the line. After filling the fluid up, within an hour, all the fluid had leaked out. This car has never been worked on for any mechanical problem.

Addition Also-Near the alternator there is a round black (whatever) attached to the engine, and attachment goes to the frame of the car, where it is mounted by a round rubber cushion to the frame. Along this metal frame there is mounted a rectangle box (small)? This mount, the one nearest the engine is extremely hot to the touch. What is this?

Answer That piece is part of the engine mount system and the block if you are describing it correctly is a frequency vibration dampener. Can you get a digital infrared thermometer and get the exact temps under the hood? If the alternator is over charging or the bearings are going bad it could get hotter then normal but usually this will cause the battery light to come on in the dash. I can only give general ideas because this format does not allow me to feel the temps or smell any odors. There is nothing common that I can point you to. Temperatures under the hood especially near the exhaust manifold can get extremely hot. The alternator is very close to the exhaust manifold.
