I was first told head gasket is gone

Car: Acura, CL, 2003     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura Repair Manuals

Q.Ok, I have an acura 2.3 cl...problem.........no heat, I was first told head gasket is gone. there was no trace of antifreeze in oil, no loss of coolant anywhere. I also had a new therostat put in, I had a new radiator installed last year. I was then told the car still had air in system. I was told to jack up car 24" above heater core. That worked great for about 6 months. Now, I still have the same problem......any thoughts

Answer If it is not overheating while driving then it is likely you have a plugged heater core. But If you are getting air into the system then it is likely you have a bad head gasket.

Addition Ok, The car runs great, no hesitation, great pick up, does not overheat...How do I find out if the heater core is plugged.

Answer The best way I have found is to flush the heater core, you do this by removing both hoses off the heater core and attaching a hose to one side and turn on the water, then put the hose on the other side and turn on again. I usually do this three or four times, then reconnect hoses and refill with antifreeze and see if you have heat.

Addition I just drove the car this morning, Now, I have not done any repairs. But the heat is working. Why ?..what'a going on ?.this is what it has been doing for the last year. Is there a cabin sensor or something that might be causing this problem, could my heat selector be defective..?????

More Info required Did the heat last for the whole trip? Does it still have heat?

Addition Yes it did last and yes it still has heat.

More Info required When this happens how long does it usually last?

Addition It will last for a few weeks, sometimes a few months, and also sometimes it will be very hot, the heat will stay on even if I turn it down to 18 deg..

Answer If this is the case it is likely you either have a problem with the climate controller or the air mixture control motor or door problem. It would be best to have these tested with a scan tool, and it would be best to have this done while it is failing.
