My 98 Accord won't start.

Car: Honda, Accord, 1998     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Honda Accord Repair Manuals

Q.My 98 Accord won't start. There is a clicking noise when I turn The key, but when I tried to jump, only more of the same.

I already checked/done: Jumping then I am stumped

Answer This is most likely the starter itself. Usually the solenoid will go bad and no longer have the power to engage the flywheel and turn the engine. Use a test light or voltmeter and check for power at the starter solenoid by connecting to the solenoid wire(small wire) on the starter and have someone try to start the car. The light should light or the voltmeter should read voltage when you here the click. If there is power at the starter solenoid wire then the starter should be rebuilt or replaced. If you have no power then I would suspect the starter relay. Here is some further testing you can run but I'd do the test above for quick elimination of the starter itself.

ON-VEHICLE TESTING
NOTE: On models with theft protection system, obtain radio
security code from vehicle owner, before disconnecting
battery cable.
CLUTCH INTERLOCK SWITCH TEST (M/T)
Remove lower instrument panel cover and driver's side knee bolster
to gain access to clutch interlock switch connector. Disconnect 2-
pin connector from clutch interlock switch. Using a DVOM, check
continuity between switch terminals. Ensure continuity exists when
clutch pedal is depressed. Continuity should not exist when clutch
pedal is released. If readings are not as specified, replace clutch
interlockswitch.
GEAR POSITION SWITCH TEST (A/T)
NOTE: Civic gear position switch test is not available at time
of publication. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
1.Disconnect gear position switch connector, located above
transaxle, near gear position switch. See Fig. 3 .
2.Using a DVOM, check for continuity between specified terminals
of gear position switch. See GEAR POSITION SWITCH CONTINUITY
table. Replace gear position switch if continuity is not as
specified.

STARTER RELAY TEST
NOTE: Relay connector appearance may differ between individual
vehicles. Test procedures are the same.
1.Locate and remove starter relay from vehicle. Connect power and
ground to relay terminals "C" and "D". See Fig. 4 . Ensure
continuity exists between relay terminals "A" and "B".
2.Disconnect power and ground from terminals "C" and "D".
Continuity should no longer exist between terminals "A" and "B".
Replace starter relay if it does not test as specified.

IGNITION SWITCH TEST
NOTE: For Civic ignition switch test, see STARTERS - HITACHI
DIRECT DRIVE article.
1.Remove lower instrument panel cover and driver-side knee
bolster. On Accord, Odyssey and Oasis, disconnect 7-pin
connector from steering column harness. On CR-V and Prelude,
disconnect 6-pin and 3-pin connector from steering column
harness. See Fig. 5 or Fig. 6 .
2.On all models, using DVOM, check continuity between specified
connector terminals, with ignition switch in appropriate
position. If continuity is not as specified, replace ignition
switch.

Addition How do I change the starter and/or solenoid?

Answer 2.7L Engine
Location of the starter mounting bolts and wiring
The factory sound system has a coded theft protection system. It is recommended that you know your reset code before you begin.
Disconnect the negative, then the positive battery cable.
Remove the wiring harness from the starter motor.
Remove the starter cable from terminal B located on the back of the solenoid.
Remove the black/white wire from the S (solenoid) terminal.
Unfasten the two bolts that mount the starter the transaxle assembly, then remove the starter.
To install:
Install the starter in the reverse order of removal. Torque the starter mounting bolts to 47 ft. Lbs. (64 Nm) and the terminal mounting nut to 6.5 ft. Lbs. (9 Nm).
When installing the heavy gauge starter cable, make sure the crimped side of the terminal end is facing out.
Enter the anti-theft code and radio presets.
3.0L Engine
Location of the starter motor wiring
The factory sound system has a coded theft protection system. It is recommended that you know your reset code before you begin.
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Then the positive cable.
Remove the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) cooler.
Remove the starter cable from terminal B located on the back of the solenoid.
Remove the black/white wire from the S (solenoid) terminal.
Unfasten the two bolts that mount the starter to the transaxle assembly, then remove the starter.
To install:
Install the starter in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 33 ft. Lbs. (45 Nm) and the wire terminal nut to 7 ft. Lbs. (9 Nm).
When installing the heavy gauge starter cable, make sure the crimped side of the terminal end is facing out.
Enter the anti-theft code and radio presets.
