I get a high pitched whine which seems to come from the back

Q.I have a Honda Crx 1993 reg. When I switch on the ignition (but before I start the car) I get a high pitched whine which seems to come from the back interior. The car is not moving and the engine is not runnig so I don't know where to lookk for the fault.

Answer If the high pitched whine sounds as if it coming from the center underneath area of the car for about 3-5 seconds, this is normal. The noise you are hearing is coming from the fuel pump priming itself readying itself to start the engine. You will be unable to get the whine to go away unless you disconnect the fuel pump, main relay or fuse that powers those items. You may want to check with another Honda owner to turn the key to the ON or II position & listen for a whining noise from the area I had mentioned from above. Any other questions, please let me know.

AdditionIt starts as soon as the ignition is turned on and doesn't stopeven when the car is running. It actually sounds as if it is coming from the rear part of the car and certainly it is not a noise I have heard before. The noise starts as soon as the ignition is turned on, continues when the engines starts and all through driving. It is sufficientlu piercing to be heard above the car radio and continues after the car stops and the engine is turned off providing that the ignition is not turned off completely. The noise is definitely inside the car rather than outside.

Answer There is a concern on some of these cars that loose connections on the fuel pump wiring harness ... causing noise through the speakers on the radio. Since it happens from the time you turn the key to the run position to the time you turn it off, I would almost have to say that there is at least a similar situation happening in your CRX.

Addition Would that happen even if the radio was turned off because it does in mine.

Answer Sometimes they will still make the noise with the radio off. But, kep in mind that it is very difficult to pinpoint where a noise is coming from... over the internet.
Yes, the fuel pump might be a bit more noisy that it is supposed to be.. so you might actually want to get under it and make sure that it is the fuel pump.

Addition Have looked at the fuel pump underneath and whislt the engine is running but it definitely is not that. It sounds like a warning alam but have checked all those in the manual and none of those is causing it. Any other ideas?
